Fundamentals of University-Business Collaboration

Description

University–business collaboration plays a decisive role in strengthening innovation ecosystems, enhancing knowledge transfer and generating societal impact. Yet, effective collaboration between academia and industry does not happen by chance. It requires a clear understanding of the ecosystem, awareness of both drivers and barriers, and the ability to design structured, mutually beneficial partnerships.

This training explores the fundamentals of university–business collaboration (UBC), offering participants a comprehensive 360° view of how collaboration activities emerge, evolve and create value. By examining benefits, challenges, supporting mechanisms and long-term impacts, the session helps professionals working at the interface of universities and industry position their institutions more strategically within complex engagement landscapes.

Through conceptual frameworks, real-world case studies and facilitated discussions, participants identify opportunities for collaboration, reflect on common barriers and explore practical approaches to strengthening knowledge transfer and external engagement strategies. Particular attention is given to understanding how supporting mechanisms can be evaluated and integrated to foster sustainable, impact-driven partnerships.

At the core of the training is the idea that impactful university–business collaboration is built on insight, structure and strategy. By developing a holistic ecosystem perspective, institutions can create more coordinated approaches to engagement, build stronger relationships with external partners and unlock long-term shared value.

The training is led by Dr. Balzhan Orazbayeva, Manager Strategic Initiatives at UIIN, bringing extensive experience in university–industry engagement and partnership development.

The session is delivered online in English as part of the EU.FFICIENT training programme.
